Tafoni typically occurred in conglomerate rocks, which in Aras geopark has limitedly occurred in the rocky slopes of Aras river valley. Tafoni is plenty of spheroidal caves with tight opening in different sizes developed in rocky slopes. These features can develop by a variety of erosional mechanism, mostly in granular rocks like conglomerate or granite.

Generally, given that the area is cold semi-arid, mechanical erosion happens dominantly. So in one hand, the rock fracturing resulted from different thermal expansion coefficients in cold weather is expectable. In the other hand, water penetration from the river into the pores and caves can accelerate the cement dissolution and help to develop tafoni.
